How to Clean Carpet Stains with Vinegar and Baking Soda?

Can you use baking soda and vinegar to clean carpet stains? We had a few muddy prints on my cream carpet so used my Bissell carpet cleaner which cleaned it up a little bit not much. Recently we discovered that you can save some money when it comes to cleaning carpet stains by using white distilled vinegar and baking soda.

You can use that combination to clean pretty much anything, and it saves you from inhaling harsh chemicals, not to mention it’s not toxic for pets.

How to clean pet stains the non-toxic way. Dog, Cat, Ferret Stains If you own a dog or a cat, you most likely have some urine stains on your carpet. It happens.

Before you run out in a panic to purchase an expensive, toxic product to remove the pet stain, head into your kitchen, grab the baking soda and vinegar and follow three steps:

The key to this cleaner is to apply the two in the correct order: vinegar followed by baking soda.

  • Pour a small amount of vinegar on the carpet stain, followed by a sprinkle of baking soda. The vinegar works to saturate and soften up the offending mark while the baking soda does the lifting and deodorizing. Together, they bubble a little and work as a team to lift the stain to the surface.
  • If you have a minor stain you can just leave the mixture until it dries and vacuum it up, or you can let it sit for 30 minutes or so and rub or blot up the stain with a damp cloth if’s a little more of a stubborn stain.
  • Let it dry thoroughly and then vacuum. That’s it! I have found this concoction to work wonders on all sorts of stains, from pet to food.

Get old, dark stains out of your light-colored carpet once and for all. Pour, don’t sprinkle, apple cider vinegar all over the stain. Immediately after, drown puddle of vinegar with a mound of baking soda; it should be fizzing.

Leave this for 24 hours, or until the baking soda has completely absorbed the vinegar. Vacuum up the baking soda clumps; repeat if necessary. This has saved me from renting a carpet cleaner.

You can refer to usage hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and Dawn for:

Stain treater for clothes: 2 parts hydrogen peroxide to 1 part dish soap.

Add a few tsp. of baking soda for extra deodorizing/scrubbing power, especially for pet stains and grease stains.

Use a higher ratio of peroxide (3 or 4 parts peroxide to 1 part Dawn) for places like my examples above with the mattress & carpet, which are harder to rinse.

Mix it up as needed in smaller quantities, so the chemical reaction is fresh and most effective at fighting stains.

Note: Don’t put baking soda in your machine! It can clog it up!
Baking soda mixed with other things is good for cleaning.

  • Baking soda + lemon juice makes an excellent stainless steel cleaner.
  • Baking soda + hydrogen peroxide is a good grout cleaner, plus a general scrubber for nasty baking pans and such.
  • Baking soda + dishwashing liquid is a good bathroom cleaner.
  • Baking soda + water is good for mopping tile, or any floors that are not hardwood.
  • Baking soda sprinkled into the carpet before vacuuming works just like the carpet fresh stuff that you buy.
  • Vinegar is a great glass cleaner.
  • Vinegar will also remove hard water deposits, although you need to let it soak for a while. (Put your shower head in a baggie of vinegar and let it soak for an hour, then give it a good wipe. Almost like a new shower head.)
  • Vinegar takes the stains out of plastic containers.
  • Boil vinegar + water in the microwave, then wipe down to remove food residue.
  • Vinegar + olive oil makes a great wood polisher.
  • Vinegar + water in a 50:50 ratio is a good disinfectant. Put it in a spray bottle and use like Lysol.
  • White vinegar is also great in place of laundry softener in the wash.

What I usually do is sprinkle the area you want to clean (sink, shower, floor, etc) with baking soda and use a spray bottle filled with vinegar to spray the soda. When it fizzes up, I use a scrubber to scrub the area and leave it for a couple of minutes, then wipe it away.

The baking soda has a whitening effect, and they’re both excellent at getting rid of odors. You can also use vinegar by itself to clean mirrors and windows! Another little tip for saving money is to use cleaning rags instead of paper towels. It’s more environmentally friendly, and it will save you some cash.

You can also use vinegar and baking soda for pet stains. Apply vinegar to the stained area, then sprinkle with baking soda. Work in with a brush. Let dry and vacuum.
